2015 | LAPFF 20th Annual Conference
THE CHANGE IN ATTITUDE among institutional investors from absentee landlords to responsible owners has not been universal and is not yet complete, but it represents a significant shift in the balance of power between investors and corporations and one of the most important developments within capital markets in recent years.
The factors driving this change have been manifold - diminishing investment returns, corporate governance scandals, escalating board room pay, public criticism of business ethics, mounting environmental problems, and of course the global financial crisis – but all have contributed to persuading investors that they must take greater responsibility for how companies are run if their investments are to be safeguarded.
The journey undergone by the institutional investment community is both exemplified and prefigured by the activities of the Local Authority Pension Fund Forum (LAPFF). This grouping of public sector pension funds, in partnership with Pensions & Investment Research Consultants (PIRC), has pioneered both the shareholder engagement techniques and many of the governance and socially responsible investment issues that are now so widespread.
This, the 20th Conference of the Forum, reviews and benchmarks that journey and indicates the new challenges ahead.
